A reminder that our children do not just see the result. They see the studying, the trying, the pressure and the rebuilding too.

The notes were perfect because they were his

I had 10 weeks to complete a scholarship awarded to me by Lloyds Banking Group in conjunction with Greener Home Finance.

At the same time, I was arranging a community festival, working in the salon, trying to build my mortgage business and holding together all the moving parts of everyday life.

I knew I only had a small window to sit my final assessment, and I had spoken to my son about how nervous I felt. Learning has never always come easily to me, and although I had worked hard, I still felt the weight of wanting to pass.

The night before my exam, I was trying to revise as much as I could.

The next morning, I opened my laptop to do some last-minute revision before the 12 noon deadline.

And there they were. Handwritten notes from my son. And they were perfect in every way. He had written down little reminders for me. Words of encouragement. His way of helping. His way of saying, “I see you. I know this matters.”

I was completely shocked.

Sitting the exam with love in my heart

Full of love. Full of pride. Full of that feeling you get when someone you love reminds you why you are doing it in the first place.

And I passed.

I got only one question wrong.

I was absolutely elated.

Not just because I had passed the assessment, but because I got to share that moment with my son. He had watched me worry, revise, keep going and then achieve it.

That mattered to me.

Because our children do not just need to see us win. They need to see us try.

They need to know that hard things can be learned. That nerves do not mean you cannot do it. That pressure does not mean you have to stop. That hard work really can pay off.

The gift that made it even more special

I shared the moment on social media because I was so proud.

Proud of passing. Proud of the work I had put in. Proud of my son for noticing and caring enough to leave me those notes.

A few days later, there was a delivery at the door.

It was from a lovely friend and client who had seen my post. Her business creates beautiful framed keepsakes from special notes and drawings children make, so they are not lost forever or thrown away with everyday scraps of paper.

She had turned my son’s notes into a framed gift.

It was one of the most thoughtful things I have ever received.

Because those notes were not just paper.

They were a reminder of a moment. A reminder that my child saw me. A reminder that learning, growing and rebuilding are not always private things. Sometimes the people around us are quietly watching, cheering us on in ways we do not even realise.

Why this belongs in Hair Chair Diaries

Hair Chair Diaries is about the stories behind the moments.

The things women carry quietly. The pressure. The learning. The confidence. The money lessons. The starting again. The support that sometimes comes from the most unexpected places.

This moment reminded me that I am lucky to have the support of my family, but also the support of clients who have become part of my life in ways I will never take for granted.

The chair was never just about hair.

It was always about people, stories, encouragement, confidence and the moments that shape us.

And sometimes, the smallest handwritten note becomes the thing that reminds you to keep going.
